WMF Wisconsin is here for you

Madison, WI — September 15, 2023 — WMF Wisconsin has issued the following statement in response to the announcement by Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin that providers at PPWI clinics in Madison and Milwaukee will resume providing abortion care starting Monday, September 18, 2023.

“We envision a world where every reproductive decision, including abortion, takes place in thriving communities that are safe, peaceful, and affordable. The ability for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to resume abortion services at two clinics is a step closer to that vision.

However, there are still major gaps to abortion access. This recent change does not include reopening abortion services at the Planned Parenthood location in Sheboygan, which is the northernmost abortion clinic in Wisconsin. And since Wisconsin law does not allow providers to prescribe abortion pills via telehealth visits, thousands of people in Wisconsin will still be without accessible and affordable clinical abortion care.

Abortion funds like WMF Wisconsin are needed more than ever to fill the gaps in care.

Since the Supreme Court’s decision in June 2022 to overturn the constitutional right to abortion, pregnant people in Wisconsin and across much of the US have faced a disastrous lack of access to clinical abortions in their home state.

WMF Wisconsin, one of the nation’s oldest abortion funds, was founded in 1972 — a year before Roe v. Wade — to work toward removing financial and logistical barriers to abortion access. To date, WMF Wisconsin has funded more than 30,000 abortions because we believe in reproductive autonomy for all — not just the few.

In response to the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, which seemingly reestablished an 1849 Wisconsin law purported to outlaw abortions, WMF Wisconsin shifted to collaborating with partner organizations and other abortion funds in the region to support Wisconsin residents who needed to travel to other states for abortion care.

In June 2023, WMF Wisconsin contributed almost $72,000 so that people could access abortion, the highest monthly expenditure since WMF Wisconsin was founded. Thanks to the support of generous donors, WMF Wisconsin was able to fulfill 100% of these requests.

We have a long history of trusting partnership with PPWI, working jointly to ensure patients can afford abortions. WMF Wisconsin looks forward to reinvigorating its relationship with PPWI and continuing to provide support for people to get the abortions they want and need.
